About OHRN Learning

OHRN Learning is an initiative of the Ontario Harm Reduction Network (OHRN). OHRN supports harm reduction efforts in Ontario by providing training, networking, and knowledge exchange opportunities to service providers and agencies.

OHRN Learning is our online learning site. Here, you can access original OHRN trainings, track your progress, and participate in discussions.

Learning content on this site is designed for people working in harm reduction in Ontario, but is open to everyone willing to learn.

Read these Frequently Asked Questions to get started on OHRN Learning.

  • How do I make an account and enroll in a course?

    To make an account:

    1. Go to learn.ohrn.org
    2. Click “Sign In” in the top right corner
    3. Click “Create a new account” under the sign in fields
    4. Fill in all the information and click “Sign up.”

    To enroll in a course:

    1. To find all OHRN Learning courses that are currently available, click “All Courses” in the top menu.
    2. Click on the course you are interested in.
    3. Read the information about the course on the Course Curriculum page. If you want to take the course, click “Enroll for free.”
    4. If you are not signed in, you will be prompted to create an OHRN Learning account. If you already have one, click “I already have an account!” and sign in.
  • How do I return to a Course I started?

    If you don't finish a Course all at once, here is how to return to a Course you started.

    1. Sign in to your OHRN Learning account. This will bring you to your Student Dashboard.
    2. From the Student Dashboard, click on the course you want to return to. This will take you to your latest incomplete lesson in the course. To go to the Course Curriculum page, click “See Overview.”
  • How do I navigate within a Course?

    Check out Find Your Way Around a Course to quickly review how to navigate within a Course and how to properly complete each Lesson.

  • How can I participate in discussions on OHRN Learning?

    Use the Discussion feature within a course to leave comments and ask questions. You can also read or reply to other learners' comments. Check out Find Your Way Around a Course for more information.

  • How do I update my profile, download a Certificate, and change my notification settings?

    To update your profile:

    1. Sign in
    2. Click your name on the top right
    3. In the dropdown menu, click My Account
    4. Make changes to your basic account information. You can also edit your Country, Time Zone, and Site Language.
    5. You must click Save Changes after editing your profile.

    We recommend you change your Time Zone. By default it is set to Universal Time (UTC). If you are in Ontario, your Time Zone is "Eastern Time (US & Canada)."

    To download a Certificate:

    1. Sign in
    2. Click your name on the top right
    3. In the dropdown menu, click My Account
    4. Click Certificates
    5. Click View. On this screen, you can view the certificate, copy the link so that you can share your certificate, or download the certificate as a PDF. We recommend you download every certificate.

    To change your notification settings:

    1. Sign in
    2. Click your name on the top right
    3. In the dropdown menu, click My Account
    4. Click Notifications. This section allows you to adjust your notification settings for On-Lesson Discussions.
  • Can I access OHRN Learning on mobile?

    Yes, OHRN Learning is responsive. You can access learn.ohrn.org from a browser on any device.

    However, for the best experience, we recommend using a laptop or desktop computer.

  • Do I need to pay/ work for a specific organization/ be a student/ anything else to sign up?

    No. Anyone can sign up for OHRN Learning and it is completely free. Materials here are designed for people working in harm reduction in Ontario, but is open to everyone willing to learn.

    Our Code of Conduct is that all users have a responsibility to:

    1. Contribute to maintaining a safe, supportive, and orderly online learning environment that is conducive to learning and to show respect and dignity to other persons.
    2. Be open to learning new information, perspectives, and ideas.
    3. Be familiar with the OHRN Learning Disclaimer and Privacy statements.
    4. Ask questions when you do not understand.

  • What kind of courses can I find on OHRN Learning?

    Most courses on OHRN Learning are webinar recordings. The live webinars were designed to appeal to various learning styles (for example, through interactive elements). However, those don’t always carry over when you’re watching a recording of the webinar. As we develop the site, we aim to develop different kinds of courses (ex. short courses on key concepts).

  • How do I pronounce OHRN?

    The "H" is silent. Rhymes with "corn."



Troubleshooting Tips

If you're having technical issues, try the following. It resolves most problems.

  1. Clear cache and restart the browser.
  2. Try a different browser and/or make sure your browser is up-to-date.
  3. Try an Incognito / Private Window, as this will rule out an issue with browser extensions.
  4. Restart the device (it's a cliche but it works!).
  5. If possible, try a different device.
  6. If possible, try a different internet connection. (Corporate firewalls occasionally block the video provider. This is rare.)
  7. Some Course Lessons can take time to load. Wait at least 30 seconds, especially if it is a Video lesson, or your internet connection isn’t strong.


Common Issues FAQ

  • How do I make an account without an email address?

    We strongly recommend you use an email address to create an account. However, we know that not everyone has stable access to their email.

    When you create an account with OHRN Learning, you will NOT be sent an email to confirm your account. This means that you do not need access to an email inbox to create an account. However, if you forget your password, you will need your email address to re-set your password.

    If you are facing any issues because of email access, please fill in the Contact Us form.

  • I enrolled in a Course and now I can't get to the Course Curriculum page.

    Find the Course in your Student Dashboard and click “See Overview.”

  • Why don't I see a Certificate for a Course I completed?

    If you don't see a Certificate that you were expecting, check the following:

    1. Does the Course offer a Certificate? While most Courses on OHRN Learning do, some do not. You can double check on the Course Curriculum page.

    2. Have you completed every Lesson? Remember that you must click "Complete & Continue" at the end of each Lesson for it to be considered completed. See Find Your Way Around a Course for more details.

    3. Have you completed all the Completion Requirements? Some courses require you to watch the video in full, answer quiz questions, answer reflection questions, or provide feedback before you are issued a Certificate. Check the Completion Requirements on the Course Curriculum page.
  • Why is the date on my Certificate wrong?

    By default, this site sets all dates and times in UTC (Universal Time). Set the time zone for your account by following these steps:

    1. Sign in
    2. Click your name on the top right
    3. In the dropdown menu, click My Account
    4. Change the Timezone field. In Ontario, set it to "Eastern Time (US & Canada)."
    5. Click "Save Changes." You must click Save Changes after editing your profile.
  • Why are emails coming from Thinkific?

    Thinkific is the digital platform we've built OHRN Learning on. Notifications, like course reminder emails, will come from "OHRN Learning - [email protected]."

  • I tried updating my profile, but it's not working.

    You must click "Save Changes" after editing your profile.

  • Can I access content on OHRN Learning without an account?

    Visit Alternative Access to Content for information about accessing content without an account.

  • I'm having an issue that I can't resolve, even after reading this FAQ and trying the Troubleshooting Tips.

  • What is OHRN Learning's approach to accessibility?

    Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to accessibility that seeks to remove barriers to learning in a way that improves the learning experience for everyone.

    OHRN adopts UDL as the foundation of our accessibility approach, in combination with complementary resources and approaches to inclusive design.

  • What are the key accessibility features of OHRN Learning?

    In addition to the items in the checklist, we also consider financial, technology, and learning style accessibility.

    OHRN Learning is always and completely free.

    Learners can sign up for OHRN Learning without access to an email address (see FAQ above).

    We try to create course content that can be accessed with poor internet connections and on many kinds of devices. However, we don't have a lot of control over some aspects. We use Thinkific, a learning management system, to host OHRN Learning. The tech infrastructure depends on Thinkific.

    We aim to create courses that work for a variety of learning styles. Most of the Courses we have are webinar recordings from 2016-2021. The live webinars were designed to appeal to various learning styles (for example, through interactive elements). However, those don’t really carry over when you’re watching a recording of the webinar. As we develop new Courses, we aim to make them work better for a variety of learning styles.

  • How do I get accessibility support or report a problem?
